Proposed one-way streets, Fingal Bay

Port Stephens Council is proposing to change a portion of Marine Drive and Pacific Drive, Fingal Bay to one way only.

Project details
The proposal consists of changing the road arrangement from two way to one way in front of residents 82-94 Marine Drive and 4-8A Pacific Drive, Fingal Bay. Residents in these sections would need to circle around using Pacific Drive, Short Street and Tuna Crescent when leaving their properties.

The works are designed to primarily improve pedestrian safety near to Barry Park by allowing the necessary space for the marking of a pedestrian path and car parking spaces. Please see concept drawing above, or in our photo gallery.

Residents from 10 to 28 Pacific Drive will still have two way access but will be unable to exit turning left when leaving their properties. Other residents along Pacific Drive, Short Street and Tuna Crescent may notice increased traffic movements should the proposal be implemented.

Background
There has been community concerns raised about the safety of pedestrians especially those walking from Marine Drive to Barry Park. Access along this area has been identified in Council’s pathway plans. However, two way traffic flow together with a pathway area is not possible due to space constraints between the residences, road and coastline.

Port Stephens Local Traffic Committee, comprised of representatives from Council, Local Members of NSW Parliament, Police, RMS and Bus Company representatives, inspected the site in February 2018. Following this inspection the committee requested Council undertake community consultation regarding a one-way proposal to ensure the provision of both on-road marked parking bays and pedestrian pathway.
