Medowie Road and Nelson Bay Road Roundabout

Drawing of new intersection at Williamtown

Council is constructing a new roundabout for the RMS at the intersection of Medowie Road and Nelson Bay Road , Williamtown from February 2019.

Background

The Medowie Road/Nelson Bay Road intersection (roundabout and surrounding area) at Williamtown requires an upgrade to improve road safety and reduce congestion for motorists and cyclists.

After assessing the needs of the community, RMS (Roads and Maritime Services NSW) tasked Port Stephens Council with construction of an intersection upgrade to improve the functionality of the intersection.

Key project design details

  • Construction of a new slip lane into Medowie Road to ease vehicle access and improve safety for road users.
  • Establishment of cycle-paths on three sides of the intersection as part of a state-wide RMS safety initiative for cyclists.
  • Pavement widening – 150m to bay from Medowie Road.
  • Replacement of medians – from grassed to full concrete, to reduce ongoing maintenance.

During the works

During construction the following will apply:

  • Delays for motorists accessing the Williamtown RAAF base, other users of Medowie Road, Nelson Bay Road and the intersection.
  • Traffic maintained in both directions.
  • At times single-lane access with manned traffic control.
  • Day & night roadworks.

Timing

The works associated with this project are scheduled to begin from February 2019 and are expected to continue for a 18 week period, weather permitting... These works will involve traffic control measures during this period and we implore road users to exercise patience.
