Welcome to our dedicated page for koalas in the Port Stephens area.

Port Stephens is home to one of the last remaining koala populations on the east coast of Australia, but numbers are in decline. Here you can learn about how Port Stephens Council is assisting the health and population of koalas in our area.

We are working on a number of projects to help benefit koala populations.

Koala Sightings (see map below)

We are seeking input from our residents and visitors about our Koala population. You can mark your sighting in the map below. If you can provide photos and advice regarding sightings this will help us to stay informed about population numbers and movements of koalas in the local government area.

Include as much information as possible about your sighting - including things like nearest cross street.

Koala Sanctuary

Port Stephens Council in partnership with Port Stephens Koalas has created a Koala Sanctuary to ensure first-class care to sick, injured and orphaned koalas. The Koala Sanctuary offers visitors a unique opportunity to see koalas in their natural habitat. It will also support their long-term rehabilitation and preservation

Port Stephens Council Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management (CKPoM).

In order to implement measures to protect koalas and their habitat and maintain compliance with state planning policies, Council and a Steering Committee developed a CKPoM. We are currently in the process of reviewing this Plan and developing an updated Koala strategy to tackle some of the challenges facing koalas in Port Stephens include habitat loss, disease, vehicle collisions and dog attacks.
