Project overview
The Hunter is currently a major tourism destination in NSW and Australia. Over 10 million visitors come to see the great variety of Hunter experiences every year. Cycle tourism is widely known as a driver of visitor spend and overnight stays. Part of the proposed Shiraz to Shore Cycle Trail is a new shared pathway from Fern Bay to Newcastle Airport. This pathway has been identified as a priority by the Hunter Joint Organisation to provide an important connection from an existing shared path at Stockton through to Newcastle Airport. This missing link will also provide better connectivity and a reliable safe active transport option from Newcastle City to the Newcastle Airport.
Project deliverables
The aim of this project is to produce a design for a 6.8km shared path from the existing path at the intersection of Nelson bay Road and Fullerton Cove Road (southern entrance) through to Newcastle Airport.
Latest updates
Our survey of the current site conditions is nearly complete, and we've developed a conceptual design. As depicted on the map, our plan positions the shared path along the western side of Fullerton Cove Road and Nelson Bay Road, linking it to existing pathways at the southern end of the project and Newcastle Airport.
As we refine the design, we'll engage with stakeholders directly affected by the proposed shared path. Over the next few months, our team may conduct on-site inspections to advance the design and secure necessary planning permits.
