Project overview

Corlette Beach is a popular swimming destination for locals and tourists and the ongoing shoreline erosion is presenting a risk to public safety.

In addition, the recreational access and amenity of the beach near Conroy Park is impacted by reduced beach volume and width. The proposed sand carting to move accumulated sand from the western end of the beach next to The Anchorage breakwater further to the east to enable it to be gradually transported westward in front of Conroy Park to provide improved amenity value and prevent burial of storm water outlets at Corlette Beach.

Sand nourishment is a temporary response to the ongoing severe coastal erosion experienced at Corlette. The design life of the nourishment is contingent on weather and is difficult to predict. In response to this, the Coastal Management Program (CMP) will continue to monitor sand movement in Corlette and undertake nourishment on an annual basis or as required.

The project includes:

  • Sand will be transported from borrow site at the western end of Corlette beach foreshore to the erosion areas aligning Conroy Park.
  • Sand will be shaped into place using a combination of posi-track loaders and a 14 tonne excavator.
